The Marianne North Gallery, now just over 125 years old, is a unique building housing a fascinating collection of one woman's botanical art. The Gallery and its contents were in dire need of conservation so we have launched a public appeal for donations as well as a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to restore and enhance this extraordinary Victorian treasure house.
For the Gallery to remain open to the public, the roof needed replacing and the building weather proofing. The Gallery also required state of the art environmental controls to maintain the paintings in the best possible condition for the future.
The total cost of this important project is £3.7 million. We were awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund for half the total, leaving us to raise the remainder from other sources.
Kew is working towards raising further funds to conserve the Gallery and its paintings. You can help us safeguard the future of this extraordinary collection by adopting a painting or making a donation.
Our Adopt a Painting scheme offers you the chance to play a part in protecting the future of each painting and supporting a unique historic collection.
Be part of the project
- the Adopt a Painting scheme has been a great success since it was launched last year -- many of the paintings are still available for adoption
- you can select a painting with particular locations, buildings, plant or animal species - whatever has particular relevance to you.
- Painting Adoptions are priced at £1,000, £750 or £500 and payment can be made in monthly instalments.
In adopting a painting you will receive
- a ten year adoption of your chosen painting
- a print of your painting
- acknowledgement in the refurbished Gallery
- a dedication on the touchscreen gift register in the Secluded Garden glasshouse at Kew
- the opportunity to see painting conservation in progress
- an invitation to a special event at the Gallery when the project has been completed in 2010
