Acidosasa

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (2), or short (5), or elongated (5); leptomorph (5/10), or pachymorph (5/10). Culms erect (8/8); 106.4–520.9–1560 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Culm-nodes flush with internodes (2/3), or swollen (2/3); with distinct supra-nodal ridge (1/1). Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement two (2/11), or three (10/11); in a clump (1/1); with subequal branches (2/3), or 1 branch dominant (2/3); thinner than stem (1/1). Culm-sheaths deciduous (8/8); without auricles (6/11), or auriculate (5/11). Culm-sheath blade linear (2/11), or lanceolate (9/11), or ovate (1/11), or triangular (1/11). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (11), or falcate (1). Ligule an eciliate membrane (10), or a ciliolate membrane (2). Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades linear (1), or lanceolate (11). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (4), or with obscure cross veins (1), or with distinct cross veins (7).

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence simple (10/11), or bractiferous (1/11); scanty (1/1); with glumaceous subtending bracts (1/1); with axillary buds at base of spikelet (1/1). Inflorescence a panicle (3/10), or composed of racemes (6/10), or comprising only a few spikelets (6/10).

Panicle open (2/2).

Racemes single (6/6); bearing few fertile spikelets (6/6); bearing 2 fertile spikelets on each (2/6), or 3 fertile spikelets on each (6/6), or 4 fertile spikelets on each (5/6), or 5 fertile spikelets on each (3/6), or 6 fertile spikelets on each (1/6).

Spikelets ascending (1/1), or pendulous (1/1); solitary (10/10). Fertile spikelets sessile (2/11), or pedicelled (10/11).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3–10–33 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex (11/11). Spikelets linear (8/11), or lanceolate (3/11), or oblong (2/11); laterally compressed (11/11); 15–61.8–170 mm long; breaking up at maturity (11/11); disarticulating below each fertile floret (11/11). Rhachilla internodes definite (11/11); glabrous (5/11), or pubescent (6/11).

GLUMES Glumes two (7/11), or several (4/11); persistent (11/11); shorter than spikelet (10/10). Lower glume ovate (9/9); chartaceous (9/9); without keels (8/9), or 1-keeled (1/9); 3 -veined (1/2), or 7–9 -veined (1/2). Lower glume surface smooth (11/11), or scabrous (1/11); without pits (11/11); glabrous (10/11), or puberulous (2/11). Lower glume apex acute (9/9); muticous (8/9), or mucronate (1/9). Upper glume lanceolate (4/9), or ovate (7/9); chartaceous (9/9); without keels (8/9), or 1-keeled (1/9); 11–13 -veined (1/1). Upper glume surface smooth (11/11), or scabrous (1/11); glabrous (10/11), or puberulous (2/11). Upper glume apex acute (9/9); muticous (3/9), or mucronate (6/9).

FLORETS Fertile lemma oblong (3/11), or ovate (10/11); chartaceous (11/11); without keel (10/10); wingless (11/11); 9–11 -veined (1/7), or 13–14 -veined (3/7), or 15 -veined (5/7), or 16 -veined (4/7), or 17–18 -veined (5/7), or 19 -veined (3/7). Lemma surface unwrinkled (11/11); without grooves (11/11); glabrous (5/11), or puberulous (1/11), or pubescent (4/11), or hispidulous (1/11). Lemma margins eciliate (8/11), or ciliolate (1/11), or ciliate (2/11). Lemma apex obtuse (1/10), or acute (2/10), or acuminate (8/10); muticous (10/11), or mucronate (1/11). Palea 1 length of lemma; 2 -veined (1/3), or 5–7 -veined (1/3), or 9 -veined (1/3). Palea keels separated (10/11), or approximate (1/11); smooth (10/11), or scaberulous (1/11); eciliate (3/11), or ciliolate (6/11), or ciliate (2/11). Palea surface glabrous (8/11), or puberulous (1/11), or pubescent (2/11). Palea apex entire (1/1), or dentate (1/1). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (11/11).

FLOWER Lodicules 3 (11/11); glabrous (7/11), or ciliate (4/11). Anthers 4–5 (1/11), or 6 (11/11). Stigmas 1 (1/11), or 3 (10/11). Ovary glabrous (4/4).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (10/10); apex unappendaged (9/9).

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia (11), or Tropical Asia (1).
