Amphipogon

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (4), or short (6). Culms erect (7/8), or geniculately ascending (5/8), or decumbent (1/8); 10–32.77–60 cm long. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaf-blades filiform (5), or linear (4); stiff (4), or firm (5). Leaf-blade apex muticous (4), or pungent (5).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle spiciform (4), or capitate (6).

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets sessile (2), or pedicelled (7). Pedicels linear (1/5), or oblong (4/5).

STERILE SPIKELETS Basal sterile spikelets absent (7), or rudimentary (5).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets oblong (8), or cuneate (1); laterally compressed; 5–8.4–13 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus brief (7), or elongated (2); glabrous (2), or pubescent (7); obtuse (6), or acute (2), or pungent (1).

GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet (2), or reaching apex of florets (1), or exceeding apex of florets (6); thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate (5), or ovate (4); 0.75–1.013–1.3 length of upper glume; membranous (6), or chartaceous (2), or scarious (1); without keels (8), or 1-keeled (1); 1 -veined (1), or 3 -veined (8). Lower glume lateral veins absent (1), or distinct (8). Lower glume surface smooth (7), or scabrous (2); without pits; glabrous (6), or pilose (2), or hirsute (1), or villous (1). Lower glume apex entire (8), or dentate (1); 3 -fid (1/1); obtuse (1/8), or acute (3/8), or acuminate (2/8), or setaceously attenuate (2/8); muticous (7), or awned (2). Upper glume lanceolate (4), or elliptic (1), or ovate (4); 0.3–1.105–1.8 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous (6), or chartaceous (2), or scarious (1); with undifferentiated margins (7), or hyaline margins (1), or membranous margins (1); without keels (8), or 1-keeled (1); 1 -veined (1/8), or 3 -veined (7/8). Upper glume surface smooth (7), or scabrous (2); glabrous (6), or pilose (2), or hirsute (1), or villous (1); with simple hairs (3/4), or tubercle-based hairs (1/4). Upper glume apex entire (8), or dentate (1); 3 -fid (1/1); obtuse (1/8), or acute (3/8), or acuminate (2/8), or setaceously attenuate (2/8); muticous (7), or awned (2); 1 -awned (2/2).

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (1), or elliptic (1), or oblong (7); not gibbous (8), or gibbous (1); cartilaginous (1), or coriaceous (8); of similar consistency on margins (8), or much thinner on margins (1); without keel; wingless; 3 -veined (8), or 7 -veined (1). Lemma midvein eciliate (7), or pubescent (2). Lemma lateral veins obscure (1/1). Lemma surface smooth (8), or scabrous (1); unwrinkled; without grooves; glabrous (3), or pubescent (6), or pilose (1), or plumose (1); hairy on back (5/7), or on veins (1/7), or between veins (1/7). Lemma margins involute; exposing palea (8), or covering most of palea (1). Lemma apex entire (1), or lobed (8); 3 -fid (8/8); incised 0.3–0.5325–0.7 of lemma length; acute (1/3), or acuminate (1/3), or setaceously attenuate (1/3); muticous (2), or awned (7); 3 -awned (7/7). Principal lemma awn straight (6/7), or geniculate (1/7); limb glabrous (6/7), or ciliate (2/7). Lateral lemma awns subequal to principal (5/7), or shorter than principal (2/7). Palea 0.9–0.95–1 length of lemma; membranous (7), or cartilaginous (1), or coriaceous (1); 2 -veined; without keels (7), or 2-keeled (2). Palea keels smooth (1/2), or scaberulous (1/2).
