HABIT Perennial. Culms erect (1/1), or geniculately ascending (1/1); 6–14.5–35 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades filiform.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open (1), or contracted.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate (1), or elliptic (1); laterally compressed; 1.7–2.375–3 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus pubescent (1), or pilose (1).

GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma; gaping. Lower glume ovate; 0.9–0.95–1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex obtuse (1), or acute (1). Upper glume ovate; 0.5–0.675–0.75 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume apex obtuse (1), or acute (1).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; cartilaginous; keeled; wingless; 3–4 -veined (1), or 5 -veined. Lemma lateral veins without ribs (1), or ribbed (1). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex emarginate; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn subapical; straight (1), or hooked (1). Palea 0.6–0.8–1 length of lemma.

FLOWER Anthers 3.

DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia (1), or Australasia (1).
