HABIT Perennial. Culms geniculately ascending (1), or decumbent (1); slender (1/1); 20–32.5–50 cm long. Lateral branches lacking (1/1). Ligule an eciliate membrane.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate, or ovate (1); laterally compressed; 2.5–3.101–4.2 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus glabrous (1), or sparsely hairy (1); obtuse (1), or acute (1).

GLUMES Glumes one the lower absent or obscure (1), or two; persistent; shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma (1), or firmer than fertile lemma (1). Lower glume lanceolate (1), or orbicular (1); 0.05–0.4–0.75 length of upper glume; hyaline (1), or membranous (1); 1-keeled (1/1); 1 -veined (1/1). Lower glume lateral veins absent (1), or distinct (1). Lower glume surface smooth (1), or scabrous (1); without pits. Lower glume apex truncate (1), or acute (1). Upper glume lanceolate; 0.4–0.65–0.8 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume surface smooth (1), or scabrous (1). Upper glume apex acute (1), or acuminate (1).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; membranous (1), or cartilaginous (1); keeled; wingless; 5 -veined. Lemma midvein without distinctive roughness (1), or scaberulous (1). Lemma lateral veins obscure (1/1). Lemma surface smooth (1), or scabrous (1); unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex entire (1), or dentate (1); 2 -fid (1/1); acute (1), or acuminate (1). Palea 1 length of lemma; hyaline (1), or membranous (1); 2 -veined. Palea keels separated (1), or approximate (1); smooth (1), or scaberulous (1).

FLOWER Lodicules 2 (1/1). Anthers 3. Stigmas 2 (1/1).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (1/1). Hilum punctiform (1/1).

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia, or Tropical Asia.
