HABIT Annual. Culms erect; slender (1/1); 8–18.99–40 cm long. Lateral branches ample (2/2). Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades linear (2), or lanceolate (1).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes; subtended by a spatheole. Spatheole linear; membranous.

Racemes single (1), or paired; bearing few fertile spikelets; bearing 3–4 fertile spikelets on each (2/2). Rhachis fragile at the nodes; flattened (2/2). Rhachis internodes linear. Rhachis internode tip oblique; cupuliform. Raceme-bases filiform.

Spikelets in pairs. Fertile spikelets sessile; 1 in the cluster. Companion sterile spikelets pedicelled; 1 in the cluster. Pedicels linear.

STERILE SPIKELETS Basal sterile spikelets well-developed.

Companion sterile spikelets well-developed; persistent. Companion sterile spikelet callus square. Companion sterile spikelet glumes muticous (1), or awned.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 1.66–6.542–12 mm long; falling entire; deciduous with accessory branch structures. Spikelet callus oblong (2), or cuneate (1); pilose (1/2), or bearded (1/2); base obtuse (1/2), or acute (1/2); attached obliquely.

GLUMES Glumes exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate; coriaceous; 2-keeled; winged on keel; 2–5 -veined (1/2). Lower glume intercarinal veins absent (2/2). Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex acute (2), or acuminate (1); muticous (2), or awned (1). Upper glume oblong; membranous; with undifferentiated margins (2), or hyaline margins (1); 1-keeled; 3 -veined (1/2), or 5–7 -veined (1/2). Upper glume apex lobed; 3 -fid; awned; 1 -awned.

FLORETS Basal sterile florets barren; without significant palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret lanceolate; hyaline; 2 -veined (2/2). Fertile lemma oblong; membranous; keeled; wingless; 3 -veined (2/2). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex lobed; 2 -fid; incised 0.15 of lemma length; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn from a sinus; geniculate. Palea hyaline (2), or membranous (1); 2 -veined (2/2).

FLOWER Anthers 3 (2/2).

DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia.
