HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms erect; 100–579–2600 cm long; woody; without nodal roots (1/1). Culm-internodes terete. Culm-nodes flush with internodes (1/1). Lateral branches suffrutescent (1), or dendroid (4). Branch complement one (1/2), or many (1/2); as thick as stem (1/1). Culm-sheaths tardily deciduous (1/1); without auricles (1/4), or auriculate (3/4). Culm-sheath blade linear (1/4), or lanceolate (2/4), or narrowly ovate (1/4), or ovate (1/4); constricted at base (1/2), or narrower than sheath (1/2). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (3), or falcate (2). Ligule an eciliate membrane (3), or a ciliolate membrane (2). Leaf-blade base without a false petiole (1), or with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath (4). Leaf-blades lanceolate (1), or oblong (4). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (4), or with obscure cross veins (1).

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous (3/3); clustered at the nodes (3/3); in untidy tufts (3/3); with glumaceous subtending bracts (1/3), or spathaceous subtending bracts (2/3); with axillary buds at base of spikelet (3/3); leafy between clusters (1/3), or leafless between clusters (2/3).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3 fertile florets (1/3), or 4–6 fertile florets (2/3), or 7–9 fertile florets (1/3); with diminished florets at the apex (3/3). Spikelets linear (2/3), or lanceolate (1/3); laterally compressed (3/3); 12.45–19.57–30 mm long; breaking up at maturity (3/3); disarticulating below each fertile floret (3/3). Rhachilla internodes brief up to lowest fertile floret (2/3), or elongated below proximal fertile floret (1/3); definite (3/3).

GLUMES Glumes two (2/3), or several (1/3). Lower glume lanceolate (1/1); chartaceous (1/1); 11 -veined (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits (3/3). Lower glume apex mucronate (1/1). Upper glume lanceolate (1/2), or oblong (1/2), or ovate (1/2); chartaceous (1/1); 11 -veined (1/1). Upper glume muticous (1/2), or mucronate (1/2).

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (2/3), or oblong (1/3); without keel (3/3); wingless (3/3); 7 -veined (1/2), or 9–11 -veined (1/2). Lemma surface unwrinkled (3/3); without grooves (3/3); glabrous (2/3), or hispidulous (1/3). Lemma apex apiculate (2/2). Palea 0.9–0.95–1 length of lemma; 6–8 -veined (1/3), or 10 -veined (1/3). Palea keels eciliate (1/3), or ciliolate (1/3), or ciliate (1/3). Palea surface glabrous (2/3), or pilose (1/3). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (3/3).

FLOWER Lodicules 3 (3/3); membranous (3/3); emarginate (1/1). Anthers 6 (3/3). Stigmas 3 (3/3). Ovary unappendaged (2/3), or umbonate (1/3); glabrous (2/2).
