HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short. Culms 60–100 cm long. Ligule a ciliolate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or ovate. Leaf-blade venation with distinct cross veins.

INFLORESCENCE Monoecious; with male and female spikelets in the same inflorescence. Synflorescence on a separate leafless culm. Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle contracted.

Sexes segregated; on unisexual branches; with male below. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Male spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels linear.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; dorsally compressed; 4–9 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus evident.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume elliptic; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; without keels; 3–7 -veined. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex obtuse. Upper glume elliptic; 0.75 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; without keels; 3–7 -veined. Upper glume apex obtuse.

FLORETS Fertile florets female. Fertile lemma elliptic; coriaceous; without keel; wingless; 5–7 -veined. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves; pubescent. Lemma margins convolute; covering most of palea. Lemma apex acute; awned; 1 -awned. Palea tightly convolute around flower; 1 length of lemma; coriaceous; without keels. Palea surface pubescent.

FLOWER Lodicules 3. Anthers 2–3. Stigmas 2.

MALE Male spikelets distinct from female; lanceolate. Male spikelet glumes absent. Male spikelet lemma muticous, or awned.

DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia.
