HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (1), or elongated (38); leptomorph (38/38). Culms erect; 60–395.3–1400 cm long; woody; without nodal roots (8/30), or with aerial roots from the nodes (5/30), or with root thorns from the nodes (17/30). Culm-internodes terete (25), or channelled (6), or quadrangular (16). Culm-nodes constricted (1/21), or flush with internodes (9/21), or swollen (10/21), or flanged (3/21); without obvious supra-nodal ridge (2/4), or with distinct supra-nodal ridge (2/4). Lateral branches suffrutescent (2), or dendroid (37). Branch complement one (1/34), or two (2/34), or three (34/34), or several (9/34); in a horizontal line (27/27); with subequal branches (16/16); thinner than stem (13/13). Culm-sheaths persistent (12/35), or tardily deciduous (9/35), or deciduous (14/35); without auricles (29/30), or auriculate (1/30). Culm-sheath blade inconspicuous (5/37), or linear (20/37), or lanceolate (1/37), or narrowly ovate (1/37), or triangular (12/37); narrower than sheath (2/2). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (38), or falcate (1). Ligule an eciliate membrane (29), or a ciliolate membrane (9), or absent (1). Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades persistent (25), or deciduous at the ligule (14); linear (4), or lanceolate (38), or oblong (7); herbaceous (25), or chartaceous (14). Leaf-blade midrib conspicuous (3/3). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (5), or with obscure cross veins (3), or with distinct cross veins (31).
INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous (17/17); scanty (9/17), or linear (1/17), or paniculate (5/17), or clustered at the nodes (2/17); in untidy tufts (2/2); with glumaceous subtending bracts (16/17), or spathaceous subtending bracts (2/17); without axillary buds at base of spikelet (5/17), or with axillary buds at base of spikelet (12/17); leafless between clusters (1/1).
Fertile spikelets sessile (15/17), or pedicelled (2/17).
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3 fertile florets (5/16), or 4 fertile florets (9/16), or 5 fertile florets (11/16), or 6 fertile florets (12/16), or 7 fertile florets (9/16), or 8–10 fertile florets (6/16), or 11–12 fertile florets (3/16); with diminished florets at the apex (17/17). Spikelets linear (16/17), or elliptic (1/17); laterally compressed (17/17); 5–31.17–80 mm long; breaking up at maturity (17/17); disarticulating below each fertile floret (17/17). Rhachilla internodes definite (17/17).
GLUMES Glumes one the lower absent or obscure (1/17), or two (7/17), or several (10/17); persistent (17/17); shorter than spikelet (17/17). FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (3/17), or oblong (7/17), or ovate (10/17); membranous (5/17), or chartaceous (12/17); without keel (17/17); wingless (17/17); 3–4 -veined (1/17), or 5–6 -veined (5/17), or 7 -veined (12/17), or 8 -veined (6/17), or 9 -veined (9/17), or 10 -veined (4/17), or 11 -veined (5/17), or 12–13 -veined (2/17). Lemma surface unwrinkled (17/17); without grooves (17/17); glabrous (16/17), or puberulous (1/17), or pubescent (1/17). Lemma margins eciliate (16/17), or ciliolate (1/17). Lemma apex acute (12/17), or acuminate (1/17), or setaceously attenuate (2/17), or apiculate (2/17); muticous (15/17), or mucronate (2/17). Palea 0.6–0.9778–1.1 length of lemma; 6–7 -veined (1/3), or 8 -veined (3/3), or 9–10 -veined (2/3). Palea keels eciliate (15/17), or ciliolate (1/17), or ciliate (2/17). Palea surface glabrous (16/17), or pubescent (1/17). Palea apex entire (2/5), or dentate (5/5). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (17/17).
FLOWER Lodicules 3 (17/17); membranous (11/11); glabrous (4/17), or ciliate (15/17). Anthers 3 (17/17). Stigmas 2 (16/16), or 3 (1/16). Ovary glabrous (1/1).
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (6/17), or fleshy pericarp (11/17); ellipsoid (2/6), or oblong (4/6), or ovoid (1/6).
