HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (2), or short (2). Culms erect (2/2); 8–112–200 cm long. Lateral branches lacking (1/1). Ligule an eciliate membrane.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle open, or contracted (1). Primary panicle branches not whorled (1), or whorled at most nodes (3).
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets sessile (1), or pedicelled (3). Pedicels cuneate (1/1).
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension (2), or with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets elliptic; laterally compressed; 2–4.225–6.5 mm long; falling entire. Spikelet callus glabrous (1/1). Rhachilla internodes brief up to lowest fertile floret (1), or elongated below proximal fertile floret (3).
GLUMES Glumes reaching apex of florets, or exceeding apex of florets (2); thinner than fertile lemma (3), or similar to fertile lemma in texture (1). Lower glume lanceolate; 0.75–0.9125–1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined (3), or 3 -veined (1). Lower glume lateral veins absent (3), or distinct (1). Lower glume surface smooth (1), or asperulous (2), or scabrous (1); without pits. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume lanceolate; 1–1.037–1.2 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined (2), or 2 -veined (1), or 3 -veined (3). Upper glume surface smooth (1), or asperulous (2), or scabrous (1). Upper glume apex acute.
FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (1), or ovate (3); membranous (3), or cartilaginous (1); keeled; wingless; 3 -veined (3), or 5 -veined (1). Lemma midvein without distinctive roughness (3), or scaberulous (1). Lemma lateral veins obscure (1/1). Lemma surface smooth (2), or granulose (1), or scaberulous (1); unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex acute; muticous (1), or mucronate (2), or awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn subapical. Palea 0.9 length of lemma; hyaline (1), or membranous (3); 1 -veined (3), or 2 -veined (2); 1-keeled (3), or 2-keeled (2). Palea keels approximate (2/2); smooth (3), or scaberulous (1).
FLOWER Anthers 1 (2), or 2–3 (1).
