Coleanthus
HABIT Annual. Culms decumbent; 2–5 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle glomerate. Primary panicle branches whorled at most nodes.
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets ovate; laterally compressed; 0.415–0.6 mm long; falling entire.
GLUMES Glumes both absent or obscure.
FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; hyaline; keeled; wingless; 1 -veined. Lemma midvein scabrous. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex acute; awned; 1 -awned. Palea 1 length of lemma; hyaline; 2 -veined. Palea keels scabrous. Palea apex with excurrent keel veins.
FLOWER Lodicules absent. Anthers 2.
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; ellipsoid; laterally compressed. Embryo 0.25 length of caryopsis. Hilum elliptic.
DISTRIBUTION Europe, or Temperate Asia, or North America.
