Corynephorus
HABIT Annual (4), or perennial (1). Culms erect, or geniculately ascending (1); 7–34.3–80 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades filiform; stiff (1), or firm (4).
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle open (4), or contracted (1).
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets oblong; laterally compressed; 2.5–3.8–5 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes definite; glabrous (1), or pilose (4). Floret callus pubescent (2), or pilose (1), or bearded (2).
GLUMES Glumes persistent; exceeding apex of florets. Lower glume lanceolate; 0.75–0.89–1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex acute (4), or acuminate (1). Upper glume lanceolate (4), or ovate (1); 1.8–2.23–3 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; with undifferentiated margins (4), or membranous margins (1); 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume apex acute (4), or acuminate (1).
FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; hyaline (1), or membranous (4); without keel; wingless; 5 -veined. Lemma lateral veins obscure. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex dentate; 2 -fid; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; with scarcely tapering limb (1), or with clavate limb (4). Column of lemma awn with bearded apex.
FLOWER Anthers 3 (4/4). Ovary glabrous (4/4).
FRUIT Hilum punctiform (4/4).
DISTRIBUTION Europe (4), or Africa (3), or Temperate Asia (2), or Australasia (1), or North America (1), or South America (2).
