HABIT Annual. Culms erect (4), or geniculately ascending (4), or decumbent (4); slender (1/1); 5–19.91–38 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades persistent (4), or deciduous at the ligule (2).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle, or composed of racemes (1); exserted (4), or embraced at base by subtending leaf (2).

Panicle open. Panicle axis bearing persistent branches (3), or deciduous branches (3).

Racemes single (1/1); unilateral (1/1).

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels linear (1), or oblong.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets (2), or 3–4 fertile florets (4), or 5 fertile florets, or 6–7 fertile florets (4), or 8 fertile florets (3), or 9–12 fertile florets (2); with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets linear (4), or ovate (1), or oblanceolate (1); laterally compressed; 5–10.29–22 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes definite; glabrous (3), or pubescent (3).

GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma (1), or similar to fertile lemma in texture (5). Lower glume lanceolate; 0.4–0.6875–0.9 length of upper glume; membranous (5), or chartaceous (1); 1-keeled; 1 -veined (5), or 3 -veined (1). Lower glume lateral veins absent (5), or distinct (1). Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex obtuse (3), or acute (5), or acuminate (1); muticous (5), or mucronate (1). Upper glume lanceolate (5), or ovate (1); 0.66–0.7933–1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous (5), or chartaceous (1); with undifferentiated margins (5), or membranous margins (1); 1-keeled; 1 -veined (4), or 3 -veined (2), or 4–5 -veined (1). Upper glume apex obtuse (3), or acute (5), or acuminate (1); muticous (5), or mucronate (1).

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (4), or elliptic (2); membranous (5), or coriaceous (1); keeled; wingless; 3 -veined. Lemma midvein without distinctive roughness, or scaberulous (1). Lemma surface smooth (5), or scaberulous (1); unwrinkled; without grooves; glabrous, or pubescent (1). Lemma apex entire (5), or dentate (2); 2 -fid (2/2); emarginate (2/5), or truncate (1/5), or obtuse (2/5), or acute (2/5), or apiculate (1/5); muticous (4), or mucronate (3), or awned (1). Principal lemma awn apical (2/3), or from a sinus (1/3). Palea keels smooth (5), or scabrous (1). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 2; membranous. Anthers 3. Ovary glabrous.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; linear (1/1); trigonous (1/1). Embryo 0.1–0.125–0.15 length of caryopsis. Hilum punctiform (5/5).

DISTRIBUTION Europe (4), or Africa (4), or Temperate Asia (5), or Tropical Asia (1), or North America (1).
