HABIT Annual (1), or perennial (1). Rhizomes absent (1), or elongated (1). Culms erect (1), or decumbent (1); 10–51.25–100 cm long. Leaf-sheath auricles absent (1), or falcate. Ligule an eciliate membrane.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes.
Racemes single; oblong; bilateral. Rhachis fragile at the nodes; flattened (1/1). Spikelet packing broadside to rhachis. Rhachis internodes oblong; falling with spikelet above.
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets sessile.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets oblong; laterally compressed; 7–12.5–20 mm long; falling entire; deciduous with accessory branch structures. Rhachilla internodes definite.
GLUMES Glumes shorter than spikelet. Lower glume oblong; 1 length of upper glume; coriaceous; 2-keeled; 2–5 -veined (1). Lower glume surface without pits; glabrous (1), or pilose (1); without hair tufts (1), or with tufts of hair along primary vein (1). Lower glume apex truncate, or obtuse (1); awned. Upper glume oblong; 0.5–0.625–0.75 length of adjacent fertile lemma; coriaceous; with membranous margins; 2-keeled; 2–5 -veined (1). Upper glume primary vein eciliate (1), or ciliate (1). Upper glume lateral veins convergent at apex. Upper glume surface glabrous (1), or pilose (1); without hair tufts (1), or with tufts of hair along primary vein (1). Upper glume apex truncate, or obtuse (1); awned; 1 -awned.
FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate, or oblong (1); coriaceous; keeled; wingless; 5 -veined. Lemma midvein eciliate (1), or ciliate (1). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves; glabrous (1), or pubescent (1), or pilose (1); hairy on veins; without hair tufts (1), or with tufts of hair on midvein (1). Lemma apex entire, or dentate (1); 2 -fid (1/1); emarginate (1), or truncate (1), or acuminate (1); awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn apical, or from a sinus (1). Palea 1 length of lemma. Palea keels scabrous. Apical sterile florets 1 in number, or 2–3 in number (1); barren; linear (1), or lanceolate (1).
FLOWER Lodicules 2 (1/1). Anthers 3 (1/1). Ovary unappendaged (1), or with a fleshy appendage below style insertion (1); pubescent on apex.
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (1/1); oblong (1/1); laterally compressed (1/1); trigonous (1/1). Embryo 0.25 length of caryopsis. Hilum linear (1/1); 1 length of caryopsis.
DISTRIBUTION Europe, or Africa, or Temperate Asia (1).
