HABIT Annual. Culms decumbent; 10–30 cm long. Ligule a ciliate membrane.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes.
Racemes single; multilateral.
Spikelets ascending, or spreading; solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform, or linear; tip widened.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1–2 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets ovate; laterally compressed; 6–8.5 mm long; falling entire; deciduous with the pedicel.
GLUMES Glumes exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; 1 length of upper glume; coriaceous; without keels; 5 -veined. Lower glume surface without pits; hispidulous. Lower glume apex awned. Upper glume ovate; 3 length of adjacent fertile lemma; coriaceous; without keels; 5 -veined. Upper glume surface pubescent. Upper glume apex acute; awned; 1 -awned.
FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; membranous; without keel; wingless; 1–3 -veined. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex obtuse, or acute.
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.
DISTRIBUTION Africa.
