Ferrocalamus

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms erect; 200–516.6–900 cm long; woody; with aerial roots from the nodes (1/1). Culm-internodes terete. Culm-nodes swollen (2/2). Lateral branches suffrutescent. Branch complement one (1/1); as thick as stem (2/2). Culm-sheaths persistent (2/2), or tardily deciduous (1/2); without auricles (2), or auriculate (1). Culm-sheath blade linear (1), or lanceolate (2). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (2), or erect (1). Ligule an eciliate membrane (2), or a ciliolate membrane (1). Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath (2), or with a false petiole (1). Leaf-blades lanceolate (1), or oblong (2). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (2), or with distinct cross veins (1).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle (2/2).

Panicle open (2/2).

Spikelets solitary (2/2). Fertile spikelets pedicelled (2/2).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets (1/2), or 3 fertile florets (2/2), or 4–10 fertile florets (1/2); with diminished florets at the apex (2/2). Spikelets oblong (2/2); subterete (2/2); 14–16.75–20 mm long; breaking up at maturity (2/2); disarticulating below each fertile floret (2/2). Rhachilla internodes definite (2/2).

GLUMES Glumes two (1/2), or several (1/2); persistent (2/2); shorter than spikelet (2/2). Lower glume lanceolate (1/2), or oblong (1/2); chartaceous (2/2); without keels (2/2); 1 -veined (1/2), or 16–24 -veined (1/2). Lower glume lateral veins absent (1/2), or distinct (1/2). Lower glume surface without pits (2/2); glabrous (1/2), or puberulous (1/2). Lower glume apex acuminate (2/2). Upper glume lanceolate (1/2), or oblong (1/2); chartaceous (2/2); without keels (2/2); 3–5 -veined (1/2), or 16–24 -veined (1/2). Upper glume surface glabrous (1/2), or puberulous (1/2). Upper glume apex acuminate (1/1).

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (1/2), or oblong (1/2); chartaceous (2/2); without keel (2/2); wingless (2/2); 7 -veined (1/2), or 22 -veined (1/2). Lemma surface unwrinkled (2/2); without grooves (2/2); glabrous (1/2), or puberulous (1/2). Lemma apex obtuse (1/2), or acute (1/2). Palea 22 -veined (1/1). Palea surface glabrous (1/2), or puberulous (1/2). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (2/2).

FLOWER Lodicules 3 (2/2); acute (1/1). Anthers 3 (2/2). Stigmas 2 (2/2); plumose (1/2), or pubescent (1/2).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (2/2).

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia (2), or Tropical Asia (1).
