Filgueirasia
HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms 50–80–110 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement several; in a horizontal line; with subequal branches; thinner than stem. Culm-sheaths deciduous. Ligule a ciliolate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades linear (1), or lanceolate (1).
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes (1), or comprising only a few spikelets (1); subtended by an unspecialized leaf-sheath (1), or an inflated leaf-sheath (1); embraced at base by subtending leaf.
Racemes single (1/1); bearing few fertile spikelets (1/1); bearing 1–4 fertile spikelets on each (1/1).
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 4–6 fertile florets (1), or 10–14 fertile florets (1); with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets linear (1), or lanceolate (1); laterally compressed; 30–38.25–50 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes brief up to lowest fertile floret (1), or elongated between glumes (1), or elongated below proximal fertile floret (1); definite; glabrous, or pubescent (1).
GLUMES Glumes both absent or obscure (1), or two (1), or several (1). Lower glume lanceolate (1/1); 1-keeled (1/1); 9–11 -veined (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits (1/1). Lower glume apex acute (1/1), or acuminate (1/1); awned (1/1). Upper glume lanceolate (1/1); 9–11 -veined (1/1). Upper glume apex acute (1/1), or acuminate (1/1); awned (1/1); 1 -awned (1/1).
FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (1), or ovate (1); chartaceous; keeled; wingless; 11–13 -veined (1), or 15–17 -veined (1). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins eciliate (1), or ciliate (1). Lemma apex acute (1), or acuminate (1); muticous (1), or awned (1); 1 -awned (1/1). Palea 9 -veined (1/1). Palea keels smooth (1), or scabrous (1); eciliate (1), or ciliolate (1). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.
FLOWER Lodicules 3; membranous; glabrous (1), or ciliate (1). Anthers 3. Stigmas 2. Ovary pubescent on apex (1/1).
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.
DISTRIBUTION South America.
