HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (1), or elongated (1). Culms 12–58–110 cm long. Ligule a fringe of hairs. Leaf-blades stiff.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle spiciform.

Spikelets appressed; solitary. Fertile spikelets sessile.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets cuneate; laterally compressed; 4–5.125–6 mm long; falling entire. Spikelet callus base obtuse.

GLUMES Glumes shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma; gaping. Lower glume lanceolate; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex acuminate; awned. Upper glume lanceolate; 0.8–0.85–1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume primary vein ciliolate (1), or ciliate (1). Upper glume apex acuminate; awned; 1 -awned.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (1), or oblong; membranous; much thinner above; keeled; wingless; 5 -veined, or 6–7 -veined (1). Lemma midvein without distinctive roughness (1), or scaberulous (1). Lemma lateral veins with distinct primaries but obscure intermediates (1/1). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins eciliate (1), or ciliate (1), or pubescent (1). Lemma apex obtuse (1), or acuminate (1); awned; 1 -awned. Palea 1 length of lemma. Apical sterile florets 1–3 in number; male, or barren; oblong. Apical sterile lemmas mucronate.

FLOWER Lodicules 2 (1/1); fleshy (1/1). Anthers 3 (1/1).

DISTRIBUTION Africa, or Temperate Asia (1), or Tropical Asia (1).
