Glyphochloa

HABIT Annual. Culms erect (5/7), or geniculately ascending (6/7), or decumbent (1/7); slender (4/4); 7–25.18–90 cm long. Culm-internodes terete (1/2), or channelled (1/2). Culm-nodes constricted (1/3), or swollen (2/3). Lateral branches lacking (2/6), or sparse (5/6), or ample (1/6). Ligule an eciliate membrane (10), or a ciliolate membrane (1). Leaf-blades firm (9), or flaccid (2).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes; terminal (1), or terminal and axillary (10). Peduncle widened at apex (2/2).

Racemes single; unilateral. Rhachis fragile at the nodes; subcylindrical and excavated. Spikelet packing abaxial. Rhachis internodes oblong (2), or clavate (1), or cuneate (4), or inflated (2), or hour-glass shaped (2). Rhachis internode tip transverse (9), or oblique (2); crateriform.

Spikelets in pairs. Fertile spikelets sessile; 1 in the cluster. Companion sterile spikelets pedicelled; 1 in the cluster. Pedicels fused to internode.

STERILE SPIKELETS Companion sterile spikelets well-developed; deciduous with the fertile. Companion sterile spikelet glumes muticous (1), or awned.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate (1), or elliptic (3), or oblong (4), or ovate (4); dorsally compressed; 2–4.732–8 mm long; falling entire; deciduous with accessory branch structures. Spikelet callus glabrous (7/8), or pilose (1/8); base truncate; with central peg; inserted.

GLUMES Glumes reaching apex of florets (2), or exceeding apex of florets (9); firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate (1), or elliptic (3), or oblong (5), or ovate (3); indurate; 2-keeled; wingless (2), or winged on keel (9); 3–4 -veined (1/5), or 5 -veined (3/5), or 6 -veined (2/5), or 7–8 -veined (1/5), or 9 -veined (2/5), or 10 -veined (1/5). Lower glume lateral veins without ribs (7), or ribbed (4). Lower glume surface smooth (1), or asperulous (1), or with hooked spines (1), or rugose (7), or cancellate (1); without pits; glabrous (9), or puberulous (2), or pubescent (2), or pilose (1). Lower glume apex entire (6), or lobed (5); 2 -fid (5/5); acute (3/5), or caudate (2/5); muticous (2), or awned (10). Upper glume lanceolate (1), or elliptic (8), or oblong (2), or ovate (2); membranous; without keels (1/6), or 1-keeled (5/6); wingless (10), or winged on keel (1); 3 -veined (8/8). Upper glume surface glabrous (9), or puberulous (1), or pubescent (1). Upper glume apex acute (3/3), or acuminate (1/3).

FLORETS Basal sterile florets male (3), or barren (8); with palea (6), or without significant palea (5). Lemma of lower sterile floret lanceolate (2), or elliptic (1), or oblong (7), or ovate (2); hyaline; 0 -veined (1/4), or 2 -veined (3/4); obtuse (2/2). Fertile lemma lanceolate (1), or elliptic (5), or ovate (6); hyaline; without keel; wingless; 0 -veined (2/4), or 1 -veined (1/4), or 3 -veined (1/4). Lemma surface smooth (10), or scaberulous (1); unwrinkled; without grooves; glabrous (10), or pilose (1). Lemma apex obtuse (1/1). Palea 1 length of lemma; hyaline (2), or membranous (9); 2 -veined (1/1).

FLOWER Lodicules 2 (3/3); fleshy (1/1); truncate (1/1). Anthers 3 (6/6). Stigmas 2 (1/1).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (2/2); ellipsoid (2/2).
