HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (2), or elongated (17); leptomorph (17/17). Culms erect (18/18); 150–647.2–1700 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete (16), or channelled (3). Culm-nodes swollen (5/7), or flanged (2/7); with distinct supra-nodal ridge (9/9). Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement one (1/18), or two (2/18), or three (16/18), or several (2/18); in a horizontal line (1/1); with subequal branches (1/5), or 1 branch dominant (5/5); thinner than stem (5/5). Culm-sheaths tardily deciduous (1/8), or deciduous (7/8); without auricles (5/12), or auriculate (7/12). Culm-sheath blade inconspicuous (1/13), or lanceolate (6/13), or narrowly ovate (1/13), or ovate (1/13), or triangular (4/13); constricted at base (1/3), or narrower than sheath (2/3). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (15), or erect (2), or falcate (3). Ligule an eciliate membrane (18), or a ciliolate membrane (1). Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate (18), or elliptic (1), or oblong (4); herbaceous (11), or chartaceous (8); stiff (1), or firm (18). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (9), or with obscure cross veins (1), or with distinct cross veins (9).
INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous (10/10); scanty (1/10), or paniculate (9/10); with glumaceous subtending bracts (10/10); without axillary buds at base of spikelet (1/10), or with axillary buds at base of spikelet (9/10).
Fertile spikelets sessile (10/10).
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 4–12–28 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex (10/10). Spikelets linear (10/10); laterally compressed (9/10), or subterete (1/10); 30–97.31–220 mm long; breaking up at maturity (10/10); disarticulating below each fertile floret (10/10). Rhachilla internodes definite (10/10); glabrous (9/10), or pubescent (1/10).
GLUMES Glumes two (4/10), or several (7/10); persistent (10/10); shorter than spikelet (10/10). Lower glume lanceolate (4/6), or ovate (2/6); 0.7–0.75–0.8 length of upper glume; chartaceous (1/1); without keels (1/1); 9 -veined (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits (10/10); glabrous (9/10), or hispid (1/10). Lower glume apex obtuse (1/2), or acute (1/2). Upper glume lanceolate (4/7), or ovate (3/7); 0.9–1.05–1.2 length of adjacent fertile lemma; chartaceous (1/1); without keels (1/1); 9 -veined (1/1). Upper glume lateral veins with cross-veins (1/1). Upper glume surface glabrous (9/10), or hispid (1/10). Upper glume apex obtuse (1/2), or acute (1/2).
FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate (10/10); chartaceous (3/10), or coriaceous (7/10); without keel (10/10); wingless (10/10); 9 -veined (1/6), or 13 -veined (1/6), or 14 -veined (2/6), or 15 -veined (3/6), or 16–20 -veined (1/6), or 21–23 -veined (2/6). Lemma surface unwrinkled (10/10); without grooves (10/10); glabrous (9/10), or hispid (1/10). Lemma margins eciliate (10/10), or ciliolate (1/10), or ciliate (1/10).
