Iseilema

HABIT Annual (20), or perennial (4). Culms erect (18/23), or geniculately ascending (11/23), or prostrate (2/23), or rambling (1/23); slender (1/1); 5–38.16–130 cm long; rooting from lower nodes (2/2). Lateral branches lacking (2/5), or sparse (3/5), or ample (2/5). Ligule an eciliate membrane (7), or a ciliolate membrane (14), or a ciliate membrane (3), or a fringe of hairs (1). Leaf-blades linear, or lanceolate (1); stiff (2), or firm (21), or flaccid (1).

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence compound; scanty (4), or linear (15), or paniculate (4), or fasciculate (1). Inflorescence composed of racemes; terminal and axillary; deciduous as a whole; subtended by a spatheole; enclosed. Spatheole linear (2), or lanceolate (14), or elliptic (13), or ovate (1); membranous (2), or chartaceous (3), or herbaceous (17), or coriaceous (2). Peduncle persistent (21), or disarticulating (3).

Racemes single; linear (1), or oblong (23); bearing few fertile spikelets; bearing 1 fertile spikelets on each. Rhachis internodes indefinite (2), or filiform (2), or linear (20).

Spikelets in threes. Fertile spikelets sessile; 1 in the cluster. Companion sterile spikelets pedicelled; 2 in the cluster. Pedicels filiform.

STERILE SPIKELETS Basal sterile spikelets represented by a single scale (2), or rudimentary (1), or well-developed (22); forming an involucre about the fertile; deciduous with the fertile.

Companion sterile spikelets represented by barren pedicels (1), or rudimentary (1), or well-developed (22); separately deciduous (21/21). Companion sterile spikelet glumes muticous (21/21).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets linear (2), or lanceolate (20), or elliptic (3), or oblong (1); dorsally compressed; 2.5–5.832–10.8 mm long; falling entire; deciduous with accessory branch structures. Spikelet callus brief (23), or oblong (1); pilose (4/6), or bearded (2/6).

GLUMES Glumes firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate (8), or elliptic (16), or oblong (2); chartaceous (3), or cartilaginous (6), or coriaceous (15); without keels; 4 -veined (1/15), or 6 -veined (2/15), or 7 -veined (3/15), or 8 -veined (9/15), or 9 -veined (5/15), or 10 -veined (4/15), or 11 -veined (1/15), or 12 -veined (2/15). Lower glume surface convex (21), or flat (3), or concave (1); smooth (20), or asperulous (3), or tuberculate (1); without pits; glabrous (19), or pubescent (5). Lower glume apex entire (15), or dentate (10); 2 -fid (10/10); emarginate (6/18), or truncate (7/18), or obtuse (2/18), or acuminate (1/18), or caudate (3/18). Upper glume lanceolate; chartaceous (3), or cartilaginous (2), or coriaceous (19); 3 -veined (19/19), or 4–5 -veined (1/19). Upper glume primary vein eciliate (23), or ciliolate (1). Upper glume surface glabrous (22), or pubescent (2). Upper glume apex acute (2/14), or acuminate (12/14).

FLORETS Basal sterile florets barren; without significant palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret subulate (3/14), or lanceolate (2/14), or elliptic (2/14), or oblong (6/14), or ovate (1/14); hyaline (23), or membranous (1); 0 -veined (8/13), or 1 -veined (1/13), or 2 -veined (3/13), or 3 -veined (1/13); emarginate (1/4), or obtuse (3/4). Fertile florets bisexual (8), or female (16). Fertile lemma linear (23), or oblong (1); hyaline (1), or membranous (23); wingless; 1 -veined. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex entire (17), or dentate (3), or lobed (4); 2 -fid (7/7); incised 0.15–0.2433–0.33 of lemma length; muticous (1), or awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn apical (18), or from a sinus (6); straight (1), or geniculate. Palea absent or minute.

FLOWER Anthers 3 (13/13).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (4/4); ellipsoid (3/10), or oblong (4/10), or obovoid (5/10); dorsally compressed (1/1). Embryo 0.75 length of caryopsis.

DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia (12), or Australasia (12).
