HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms leaning (1/1); 700–1125–1800 cm long; woody; without nodal roots. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement several (1/1); in a clump (1/1); with subequal branches (1/1). Culm-sheath blade linear (1/1). Ligule an eciliate membrane (1), or a ciliate membrane (1). Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate.

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous; clustered at the nodes; in untidy tufts; with glumaceous subtending bracts (1), or spathaceous subtending bracts (1); with axillary buds at base of spikelet; leafy between clusters.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1–2 fertile florets (1); with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 10–14.5–25 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes definite (1/1).

GLUMES Glumes several. Lower glume ovate (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex cuspidate (1/1).

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (1), or ovate (1); without keel; wingless; 9 -veined (1), or 14 -veined (1). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma margins eciliate (1), or ciliolate (1). Lemma apex acute (1), or cuspidate (1). Palea 1 length of lemma; 10 -veined. Palea keels separated (1), or approximate (1); ciliolate. Apical sterile florets 1 in number.

FLOWER Lodicules 3; glabrous (1), or ciliate (1). Anthers 6. Stigmas 3. Ovary unappendaged (1), or umbonate (1).

DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia.
