Branch complement one (1/1), or two (1/1), or three (1/1); in a clump (1/1); thinner than stem (1/1). Culm-sheaths persistent (1/2), or deciduous (1/2); without auricles (2), or auriculate (3). Culm-sheath blade ovate (1/3), or triangular (2/3); narrower than sheath (2/2). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (2), or falcate (3). Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades persistent (4), or deciduous at the ligule (1); lanceolate (4), or elliptic (1), or ovate (2); stiff (1), or firm (4).

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous (4/4); clustered at the nodes (4/4); in untidy tufts (4/4); with glumaceous subtending bracts (2/4), or spathaceous subtending bracts (2/4); with axillary buds at base of spikelet (4/4); leafless between clusters (1/1).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3–5 fertile florets (1/4), or 6 fertile florets (2/4), or 7–8 fertile florets (1/4), or 10 fertile florets (1/4); without rhachilla extension (2/4), or with diminished florets at the apex (2/4). Spikelets lanceolate (2/4), or ovate (2/4); laterally compressed (4/4); 6–12.04–19 mm long; breaking up at maturity (4/4); disarticulating below each fertile floret (4/4). Rhachilla internodes definite (4/4).

GLUMES Glumes two (3/4), or several (1/4); persistent (4/4); shorter than spikelet (4/4). Lower glume ovate (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits (4/4). Lower glume apex acuminate (1/1); mucronate (1/1). Upper glume ovate (2/2); 5–7 -veined (1/1). Upper glume apex acute (1/2), or acuminate (1/2); mucronate (2/2).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate (4/4); without keel (4/4); wingless (4/4). Lemma surface unwrinkled (4/4); without grooves (4/4); glabrous (2/4), or puberulous (1/4), or hispidulous (1/4). Lemma margins eciliate (1/4), or ciliate (3/4). Lemma apex acute (3/4), or acuminate (1/4); muticous (2/4), or mucronate (1/4), or awned (1/4); 1 -awned (1/1). Palea 6–8 -veined (2/2). Palea keels eciliate (1/4), or ciliolate (2/4), or ciliate (1/4). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (2/2).
