Neomicrocalamus

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short (1), or elongated (4); pachymorph. Culms erect (2), or leaning (1), or scandent (3); 100–859.8–1949 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Culm-nodes flush with internodes (2/3), or swollen (1/3). Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement one (1/4), or several (2/4), or many (2/4). Culm-sheaths persistent (1/2), or deciduous (1/2); without auricles (1/1). Culm-sheath blade inconspicuous (4), or linear (3). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (4), or erect (1). Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or oblong (1), or ovate (1). Leaf-blade midrib evident (1/1). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (4), or with distinct cross veins (1).

INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence simple (1/2), or bractiferous (1/2); clustered at the nodes (1/1); in untidy tufts (1/1); with glumaceous subtending bracts (1/1); with axillary buds at base of spikelet (1/1); leafless between clusters (1/1). Inflorescence composed of racemes (1/1); terminal and axillary (1/1).

Racemes single (1/1); paucilateral (1/1); bearing few fertile spikelets (1/1); bearing 2–4 fertile spikelets on each (1/1).

Spikelets solitary (1/1). Fertile spikelets pedicelled (1/1).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets (1/2), or 3–6 fertile florets (1/2); with diminished florets at the apex (1/1). Spikelets linear (1/2), or ovate (1/2); laterally compressed (1/2), or subterete (1/2); 18–25–35 mm long; falling entire (1/2), or breaking up at maturity (1/2); disarticulating below each fertile floret (1/1). Rhachilla internodes definite (1/1).

GLUMES Glumes two (1/2), or several (2/2); persistent (1/1); shorter than spikelet (2/2). Lower glume lanceolate (1/1); membranous (1/1); 1-keeled (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits (2/2). Lower glume apex acute (1/1). Upper glume ovate (2/2); membranous (1/1); without keels (1/1); 3–5 -veined (1/1). Upper glume surface glabrous (1/2), or pilose (1/2). Upper glume apex acute (2/2); muticous (1/2), or mucronate (1/2).

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate (2/2); membranous (1/2), or chartaceous (1/2); without keel (2/2); wingless (2/2); 9–11 -veined (1/1). Lemma lateral veins prominent (1/1). Lemma surface unwrinkled (2/2); without grooves (2/2). Lemma margins flat (1/2), or convolute (1/2); exposing palea (1/2), or covering most of palea (1/2). Lemma apex acute (2/2). Palea not rolled (1/2), or tightly convolute around flower (1/2); 1 length of lemma; without keels (1/2), or 2-keeled (1/2). Palea keels ciliolate (1/1). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (1/1).

FLOWER Lodicules 3 (1/2), or several (1/2); membranous (1/1); glabrous (1/2), or ciliate (1/2). Anthers 6 (1/2), or 26–32 (1/2). Stigmas 3 (1/2), or 5 (1/2). Ovary umbonate (1/2), or with a steeple-like appendage (1/2); pubescent on apex (1/1).
