HABIT Perennial. Stolons present. Culms erect; 30–45 cm long. Ligule a fringe of hairs.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle spiciform.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels cuneate; tip oblique.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets ovate; dorsally compressed; 7.4–12 mm long; falling entire. Spikelet callus bearded.

GLUMES Glumes exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; membranous; without keels; 5–7 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins ribbed. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex acuminate; awned. Upper glume ovate; coriaceous; without keels; 11–13 -veined. Upper glume surface pubescent. Upper glume apex acuminate; awned; 1 -awned.

FLORETS Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret ovate; coriaceous; 7 -veined; ribbed; acute. Fertile lemma ovate; cartilaginous; much thinner above; without keel; wingless; 5–7 -veined. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex rostrate. Palea 1 length of lemma; cartilaginous; 2 -veined.

FLOWER Lodicules 2; fleshy. Anthers 3. Stigmas 2.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; obovoid; dorsally compressed. Embryo 0.5 length of caryopsis. Hilum punctiform.

DISTRIBUTION Australasia.
