Culm-internodes terete (2/2). Culm-nodes swollen (3/3). Lateral branches sparse (1/1). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (4), or erect (2). Ligule an eciliate membrane (1), or a ciliolate membrane (4), or a ciliate membrane (1). Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades linear (1), or lanceolate, or oblong (1), or ovate (3); stiff (2), or firm (4). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (5), or with distinct cross veins (1).
INFLORESCENCE Monoecious; with male and female spikelets in the same inflorescence. Inflorescence a panicle; terminal (4), or terminal and axillary (2).
Panicle open (5), or contracted (1). Primary panicle branches not whorled (5), or whorled at lower nodes (1).
Sexes segregated; on unisexual branches (3), or bisexual branches (5); with male below. Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Male spikelets pedicelled; 2 in a cluster (2/2), or 3 in a cluster (1/2). Pedicels filiform (3/4), or linear (1/4); tip rectangular (3/3).
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets elliptic (5), or ovate (2), or obovate (1); dorsally compressed; 2–4.607–12.8 mm long; falling entire (2), or breaking up at maturity (4); disarticulating below each fertile floret (4/4). Rhachilla internodes brief up to lowest fertile floret (1), or elongated between glumes (5), or elongated below proximal fertile floret (5).
GLUMES Glumes persistent (1/1); exceeding apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume elliptic (3), or ovate (3); clasping (2/2); 0.9–1.016–1.1 length of upper glume; membranous (2), or chartaceous (3), or herbaceous (1); without keels; 3 -veined (1), or 5 -veined (3), or 6 -veined (1), or 7 -veined (3), or 8–9 -veined (2).
