HABIT Annual. Culms erect, or geniculately ascending, or decumbent; 10–30 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes.
Racemes single; bilateral. Rhachis flattened. Spikelet packing broadside to rhachis.
Spikelets appressed; solitary. Fertile spikelets sessile.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets oblong; laterally compressed; 6–7 mm long; falling entire. Rhachilla internodes definite.
GLUMES Glumes collateral; exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate; 1 length of upper glume; coriaceous; without keels; 7 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins ribbed. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex obtuse. Upper glume lanceolate; 1.2 length of adjacent fertile lemma; coriaceous; without keels; 7 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins ribbed. Upper glume apex obtuse.
FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; membranous; without keel; wingless; 3 -veined. Lemma lateral veins extending close to apex. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves; puberulous. Lemma apex acute. Palea 0.7–0.8 length of lemma.
FLOWER Anthers 3.
DISTRIBUTION Europe, or Temperate Asia, or Australasia.
