Piptochaetium
HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (34), or short (1). Culms erect (17/17), or geniculately ascending (5/17); slender (3/3); 10–49.27–150 cm long; compressible (1), or firm (33), or wiry (1). Culm-internodes elliptical in section (1/1). Culm-nodes constricted (2/3), or swollen (1/3). Lateral branches lacking (3/3). Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades filiform (18), or linear (17); stiff (2), or firm (33).
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle; exserted (33), or embraced at base by subtending leaf (8).
Panicle open (20), or contracted (15). Primary panicle branches not whorled (32), or whorled at lower nodes (3).
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform (3/3).
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets linear (2), or lanceolate (4), or oblong (27), or obovate (2); laterally compressed (28), or subterete (7); 2.49–8.725–30 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus brief (16), or evident (6), or elongated (13); glabrous (4/34), or sparsely hairy (2/34), or pubescent (17/34), or pilose (12/34), or bearded (1/34); truncate (1), or obtuse (18), or acute (6), or pungent (10).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (29/29); fusiform (2/9), or oblong (1/9), or orbicular (4/9), or obovoid (2/9); laterally compressed (1/1). Embryo 0.2–0.2933–0.4 length of caryopsis. Hilum linear (20/20); 0.7–0.9682–1 length of caryopsis.
