INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle contracted, or spiciform (1). Primary panicle branches sterile at the tips.

Spikelets subtended by an involucre. Fertile spikelets pedicelled; 1 in the cluster (1/1). Involucre composed of bristles. Involucral bristles persistent. Pedicels oblong (1), or cuneate (1).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets oblong (1), or ovate; dorsally compressed; gibbous (1), or plano-convex (1); 2–2.75–3.5 mm long; falling entire. Rhachilla internodes brief up to lowest fertile floret (1), or elongated between glumes (1).

GLUMES Glumes reaching apex of florets, or exceeding apex of florets (1); thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume oblate; not gibbous (1), or gibbous (1); membranous; without keels; 2–3 -veined (1). Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex obtuse, or cuspidate (1). Upper glume ovate (1), or oblate (1); gibbous; 1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous (1), or herbaceous (1), or coriaceous (1), or indurate (1); without keels; wingless (1), or winged on margins (1); 11–13 -veined (1), or 17–19 -veined (1). Upper glume lateral veins without ribs (1), or ribbed (1); without cross-veins (1/1), or with cross-veins (1/1). Upper glume apex entire, or erose (1); obtuse, or acute (1), or acuminate (1), or attenuate (1), or setaceously attenuate (1), or cuspidate (1).

FLORETS Basal sterile florets barren; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret oblong (1), or ovate (1); membranous, or coriaceous; 9 -veined (1/1); sulcate; emarginate (1), or obtuse (1). Fertile lemma elliptic (1), or ovate (1); dorsally compressed (1/1); indurate; without keel (1), or keeled (1); wingless; 5 -veined (1/1). Lemma surface smooth (1), or tuberculate (1); unwrinkled (1), or rugose (1); without grooves. Lemma margins involute. Lemma apex acute (1), or cuspidate (1). Palea 0.9–0.95–1 length of lemma; indurate; 2 -veined (1/1).

FLOWER Anthers 3 (1/1). Stigmas 2 (1/1).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (1/1); ovoid (1/1).
