HABIT Perennial. Culms decumbent; 25–41.25–60 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle open (1), or contracted (1).
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets, or 2 fertile florets (1); with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 2.5–2.75–3 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.
GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; 0.7 length of upper glume; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume ovate; 0.3–0.4–0.5 length of adjacent fertile lemma; 1-keeled; 1–3 -veined. Upper glume apex acute.
FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; chartaceous; keeled; wingless; 3 -veined. Lemma surface smooth (1), or scaberulous (1); unwrinkled; without grooves; glabrous (1), or pubescent (1). Lemma apex acute; muticous (1), or mucronate. Palea 1 length of lemma; 1–2 -veined; 1-keeled. Palea surface glabrous (1), or pubescent (1).
FLOWER Lodicules 2; membranous; with a small lateral lobe. Anthers 2–3 (1).
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; ovoid; laterally compressed. Hilum punctiform.
DISTRIBUTION Australasia.
