Spodiopogon

HABIT Annual (3), or perennial (12). Rhizomes absent (9), or short (1), or elongated (5). Culms erect (11/14), or geniculately ascending (1/14), or decumbent (3/14); robust (1/3), or slender (2/3); 20–109.3–300 cm long; rooting from lower nodes (2/2). Lateral branches lacking (1/3), or ample (2/3). Leaf-sheath auricles absent (14), or erect (1). Ligule an eciliate membrane (7), or a ciliolate membrane (8). Leaf-blade base without a false petiole (8), or with a false petiole (7). Leaf-blades persistent (14), or deciduous at the ligule (1); linear (11), or lanceolate (10), or elliptic (3). Leaf-blade midrib conspicuous (2/2).

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle (1), or a panicle with branches tipped by a raceme (14); terminal (14), or terminal and axillary (1); exserted, or embraced at base by subtending leaf (1).

Panicle open (14), or contracted (1). Primary panicle branches not whorled (6), or whorled at most nodes (9).

Racemes bearing a triad of spikelets (1/14), or few fertile spikelets (12/14), or many spikelets (1/14); 2 fertile spikelets on each (4/8), or 3–4 fertile spikelets on each (6/8), or 5 fertile spikelets on each (5/8), or 6 fertile spikelets on each (4/8), or 7–8 fertile spikelets on each (3/8), or 9–11 fertile spikelets on each (2/8). Rhachis tough (3/14), or fragile at the nodes (11/14); flattened (2/10), or subterete (8/10). Rhachis internodes indefinite (7/14), or linear (3/14), or clavate (2/14), or cuneate (2/14).

Spikelets in pairs, or in threes (1). Fertile spikelets sessile and pedicelled (12), or pedicelled (3); 2 in the cluster, or 3 in the cluster (1); the upper smaller (1/1). Pedicels filiform (1/11), or linear (3/11), or clavate (5/11), or cuneate (2/11); tip cupuliform (12/12).

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate (10), or elliptic (4), or oblong (1), or ovate (4); dorsally compressed; 3.5–5.255–9 mm long; falling entire; deciduous from the base, or with accessory branch structures (12). Spikelet callus pubescent (4/14), or pilose (6/14), or bearded (4/14); base obtuse (14/14); inserted (14/14).

GLUMES Glumes exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume linear (1), or lanceolate (5), or elliptic (2), or oblong (1), or ovate (8); chartaceous; without keels; 5 -veined (3/14), or 6 -veined (5/14), or 7 -veined (10/14), or 8 -veined (6/14), or 9 -veined (7/14), or 10–11 -veined (3/14), or 12–13 -veined (1/14). Lower glume lateral veins without ribs (1), or ribbed (14). Lower glume surface smooth (14), or scabrous (1); without pits; glabrous (2), or pubescent (3), or pilose (9), or villous (1). Lower glume apex entire (11), or dentate (5); 2 -fid (5/5); emarginate (1/11), or truncate (2/11), or obtuse (2/11), or acute (5/11), or acuminate (4/11); muticous (13), or mucronate (4). Upper glume lanceolate (8), or ovate (7); chartaceous; with undifferentiated margins (14), or membranous margins (1); without keels (14), or 1-keeled (1); 3–4 -veined (5/14), or 5 -veined (8/14), or 6 -veined (4/14), or 7 -veined (8/14), or 8–11 -veined (1/14). Upper glume primary vein eciliate (13), or ciliate (2). Upper glume lateral veins ribbed. Upper glume surface smooth (14), or scabrous (1); glabrous (6), or pubescent (2), or pilose (8). Upper glume apex entire (12), or dentate (4); 2 -fid (4/4); emarginate (2/12), or obtuse (2/12), or acute (9/12), or acuminate (2/12); muticous (10), or mucronate (6), or awned (1); 1 -awned (1/1).

FLORETS Basal sterile florets male (12), or barren (3); with palea (13), or without significant palea (3). Lemma of lower sterile floret lanceolate (7), or oblong (5), or ovate (6); hyaline (11), or membranous (4); 0–2 -veined (2/6), or 3 -veined (3/6); emarginate (1/12), or truncate (2/12), or obtuse (3/12), or acute (7/12); muticous (14), or awned (1). Fertile lemma linear (6/14), or lanceolate (4/14), or oblong (6/14); hyaline; wingless; 3 -veined (2/3), or 5 -veined (1/3). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves; glabrous (14), or puberulous (1). Lemma apex entire (1), or dentate (1), or lobed (13); 2 -fid (14/14); incised 0.33–0.536–0.66 of lemma length; emarginate (1/1); muticous (1), or awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn from a sinus; straight (1), or geniculate. Palea 0.5–0.8611–1 length of lemma; hyaline (14), or membranous (1); 0 -veined (8/8); without keels (12), or 2-keeled (3). Palea apex dentate (3/3).

FLOWER Lodicules 2 (12/12); glabrous (11/12), or ciliate (1/12); 2-toothed (1/1). Anthers 3. Stigmas 2 (1/1).

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (3/3); fusiform (3/3); laterally compressed (2/2). Embryo 0.5–0.54–0.66 length of caryopsis. Hilum punctiform (2/2).

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia (11), or Tropical Asia (6).
