HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (2), or short (1). Culms erect (2/2); 10–52.56–117 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle spiciform.
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels filiform.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension (1), or with a barren rhachilla extension (2). Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 5–9.333–16 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus pilose (2/2).
GLUMES Glumes persistent; exceeding apex of florets; parallel to lemmas (2), or gaping (1). Lower glume linear (1), or lanceolate (2); 1 length of upper glume; membranous; without keels; 1–2 -veined (1), or 3 -veined, or 4–5 -veined (2). Lower glume surface smooth (2), or asperulous (1); without pits. Lower glume apex acute (1), or acuminate (2). Upper glume linear (1), or lanceolate (2); 1.2–1.641–2.25 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; with undifferentiated margins (2), or hyaline margins (1); without keels; 1–2 -veined (1), or 3 -veined, or 4–5 -veined (1). Upper glume surface smooth (2), or asperulous (1). Upper glume apex acute (1), or acuminate (2).
FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; membranous; without keel; wingless; 5 -veined. Lemma lateral veins obscure (1/1). Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves; pubescent (1), or pilose (2); with a transverse fringe of hair. Lemma apex lobed; 2 -fid; incised 0.25–0.32–0.4 of lemma length; awned; 1 -awned (1), or 3 -awned (2). Principal lemma awn from a sinus; geniculate. Palea 2 -veined. Palea surface glabrous (1), or pilose (2).
FLOWER Lodicules 2 (2), or 3 (1). Anthers 1 (1), or 3 (2). Stigmas 2 (2/2). Ovary glabrous (2/2).
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (2/2); ellipsoid (1/1). Hilum linear (1/1); 0.9 length of caryopsis.
DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia.
