Torreyochloa

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes absent (2), or elongated (1). Culms erect (1), or geniculately ascending (1), or rambling (1); slender (1/1); 10–30–50 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3 fertile florets (2), or 4 fertile florets, or 5–6 fertile florets (1); with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets oblong, or ovate (1); laterally compressed; 2–4.083–6 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes definite.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; shorter than spikelet; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; 0.75 length of upper glume; membranous; without keels; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume surface without pits. Lower glume apex obtuse. Upper glume ovate; 0.3–0.5033–0.66 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; without keels; 3 -veined. Upper glume apex obtuse.

FLORETS Fertile lemma elliptic (2), or oblong (1); chartaceous; without keel; wingless; 7 -veined. Lemma lateral veins ribbed; excurrent (1/2), or extending close to apex (1/2). Lemma surface scaberulous; unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex erose; truncate (1), or obtuse. Palea 2 -veined. Palea keels smooth (1), or scaberulous (2). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp (1/1); ellipsoid (1/1). Hilum punctiform.

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia (2), or North America (2).
