Triplopogon
HABIT Annual. Culms erect; 100–180 cm long; with prop roots. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a false petiole. Leaf-blades lanceolate; flaccid.
INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence compound; fastigiate. Inflorescence composed of racemes; terminal and axillary; subtended by a spatheole. Spatheole linear; herbaceous.
Racemes single. Rhachis fragile at the nodes; flattened. Rhachis internodes linear. Rhachis internode tip transverse.
Spikelets in pairs. Fertile spikelets sessile; 1 in the cluster. Companion sterile spikelets pedicelled; 1 in the cluster. Pedicels linear.
STERILE SPIKELETS Basal sterile spikelets rudimentary.
Companion sterile spikelets well-developed; separately deciduous.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets oblong; laterally compressed; 8–10 mm long; falling entire; deciduous with accessory branch structures. Spikelet callus pubescent; base truncate; attached transversely.
GLUMES Glumes exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume oblong; coriaceous; without keels. Lower glume surface with a longitudinal median groove; without pits; pubescent; with marginal tufts of hair. Lower glume apex obtuse. Upper glume oblong; coriaceous; without keels; 9 -veined. Upper glume surface pubescent; with a dorsal tuft of hair. Upper glume apex obtuse; mucronate.
FLORETS Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret elliptic; hyaline; 3 -veined. Fertile lemma oblong; hyaline; without keel; wingless; 3 -veined. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex lobed; 2 -fid; incised 0.5 of lemma length; awned. Principal lemma awn from a sinus; geniculate. Column of lemma awn pubescent. Palea hyaline; 2 -veined.
FLOWER Lodicules 2; membranous. Anthers 3.
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; oblong; laterally compressed. Embryo 0.5 length of caryopsis. Hilum punctiform.
DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia.
