Vietnamocalamus

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms erect; 150–250 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches suffrutescent. Branch complement one. Leaf-sheath auricles falcate. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades lanceolate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence comprising only a few spikelets; axillary; embraced at base by subtending leaf.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3–4 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets linear; subterete; 12.45–18 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes definite. Floret callus glabrous.

GLUMES Glumes several; persistent; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; chartaceous; without keels. Lower glume surface without pits. Upper glume lanceolate; chartaceous; without keels.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; chartaceous; without keel; wingless; 7 -veined. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Palea chartaceous. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 3. Anthers 3. Stigmas 2.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION Temperate Asia, or Tropical Asia.
