Fimbribambusa
HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms leaning; 700–1025–1400 cm long; woody; without nodal roots. Culm-internodes terete. Culm-nodes swollen (1/1). Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement several (1/1); with subequal branches (1/1). Culm-sheaths deciduous but leaving a persistent girdle (1/1); auriculate (1/1). Culm-sheath blade ovate (1/1). Leaf-sheath auricles falcate. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate, or oblong (1). Leaf-blade venation without cross veins (1), or with distinct cross veins (1).
INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous; clustered at the nodes; in untidy tufts; with glumaceous subtending bracts; with axillary buds at base of spikelet; leafless between clusters (1/1); on the same culm as leaves (1), or on a separate leafless culm (1).
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2–3 fertile florets (1), or 5–6 fertile florets (1); with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets lanceolate (1), or oblong (1); laterally compressed (1), or subterete (1); 6–10.5–16 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes definite.
GLUMES Glumes persistent (1/1); shorter than spikelet (1/1). Lower glume surface without pits. Upper glume ovate (1/1). Upper glume apex acuminate (1/1).
FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate (1), or ovate (1); without keel; wingless. Lemma surface smooth (1), or scabrous (1); unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex acute; muticous (1), or mucronate (1). Palea 1 length of lemma; 8–10 -veined (1/1). Palea surface glabrous (1), or puberulous (1). Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped (1), or distinct from fertile (1); 1 in number (1/1); male (1/1); rudimentary (1/1).
FLOWER Lodicules 2 (1), or 3 (1); membranous (1/1); glabrous (1), or ciliate (1). Anthers 6. Stigmas 3. Ovary umbonate; pubescent on apex (1/1).
DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia.
