HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms 300–500 cm long; woody; without nodal roots. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches dendroid. Culm-sheaths auriculate. Culm-sheath blade ovate; cordate. Leaf-sheath auricles erect. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate.
INFLORESCENCE Synflorescence bractiferous; clustered at the nodes; in untidy tufts; with glumaceous subtending bracts; with axillary buds at base of spikelet.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3–4 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 40–50 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes definite.
GLUMES Glumes several. Lower glume surface without pits.
FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; without keel; wingless. Lemma surface unwrinkled; without grooves. Lemma apex acute. Palea 12–16 -veined. Palea keels ciliolate. Palea apex dentate. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.
FLOWER Lodicules 3; ciliate. Anthers 6. Stigmas 3. Ovary umbonate.
DISTRIBUTION Tropical Asia.
