Acidosasa chinensis

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms erect; 500–800 cm long; 30–50 mm diam.; woody. Culm-internodes terete; hollow; 20 cm long; distally glabrous, or hispid. Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement three. Culm-sheaths deciduous; brown and purple; obscurely mottled with last colour; hispid; hairy on margins; without auricles; glabrous on shoulders. Culm-sheath ligule ciliolate. Culm-sheath blade lanceolate; 1.5–4.5 cm long. Leaves 2–5 per branch. Leaf-sheaths glabrous on surface. Leaf-sheath oral hairs lacking. Leaf-sheath auricles absent. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades lanceolate; 11–30 cm long; 20–65 mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with 12–22 secondary veins. Leaf-blade surface glabrous. Leaf-blade margins scabrous. Leaf-blade apex attenuate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes, or comprising only a few spikelets.

Racemes 1; single; 10–26 cm long; bearing few fertile spikelets; bearing 3–5 fertile spikelets on each.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels 15–40 mm long; glabrous.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3–18 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets linear; laterally compressed; 30–100 mm long; 3–6 mm wide; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes 6–7 mm long; glabrous.

GLUMES Glumes several; 4 empty glumes; persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume ovate; 3 mm long; chartaceous; without keels; 3 -veined. Lower glume surface glabrous. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume ovate; 16 mm long; chartaceous; without keels. Upper glume apex acute; mucronate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; 22 mm long; 9–10 mm wide; chartaceous; shiny; without keel; 17–19 -veined. Lemma lateral veins with cross-veins. Lemma surface glabrous. Lemma apex acuminate. Palea 12 mm long. Palea keels eciliate. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 3; 5–6 mm long; glabrous. Anthers 6; 5 mm long; yellow. Stigmas 3.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; apex unappendaged.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-temperate: China.
