Pleioblastus linearis

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms 50–400 cm long; 5–20 mm diam.; woody. Culm-internodes terete; hollow; 10–30 cm long; distally glabrous. Culm-nodes glabrous. Lateral branches dendroid. Branch complement one to several. Culm-sheaths antrorsely scabrous; pilose; without auricles. Culm-sheath blade linear. Leaves 5–9 per branch. Leaf-sheaths 3–5 cm long; glabrous on surface. Leaf-sheath oral hairs scanty; 6–8 mm long; pale. Ligule an eciliate membrane, or a ciliolate membrane; 1.5–4 mm long; truncate. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole 0.2 cm long. Leaf-blades deciduous at the ligule; linear, or lanceolate; 6–28 cm long; 5–10 mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with distinct cross veins. Leaf-blade surface glabrous. Leaf-blade margins scabrous. Leaf-blade apex acuminate; filiform.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence comprising only a few spikelets.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 7–15 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets linear; laterally compressed; 50–100 mm long; 3–4 mm wide; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.

GLUMES Glumes two; persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; 11 mm long; chartaceous; without keels; 3 -veined. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume lanceolate; chartaceous; without keels; 7 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins with cross-veins. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; 9–22 mm long; 4–8 mm wide; chartaceous; without keel; 13 -veined. Lemma apex acuminate. Palea 7–15 mm long; 11 -veined. Palea keels ciliolate. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 3; ovate; 3–4 mm long; veined; ciliate. Anthers 3; 8 mm long. Stigmas 3.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp; apex unappendaged.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-temperate: eastern Asia.
