Deyeuxia avenoides

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Culms erect; 20–60 cm long. Leaf-sheaths ribbed; smooth. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades filiform; involute; 3–9 cm long; 0.5–1 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface smooth.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle spiciform; linear; 5–12 cm long.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 5–6 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus pubescent. Floret callus hairs 0.5–0.7 mm long.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scabrous. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume lanceolate; 5–6 mm long; 1.1–1.2 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1–3 -veined. Upper glume primary vein scabrous. Upper glume lateral veins absent, or obscure. Upper glume surface smooth, or asperulous. Upper glume apex acuminate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 4.5–5 mm long; membranous; without keel. Lemma apex dentate; 2–4 -fid; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; arising 0.33 way up back of lemma; geniculate; 4–6 mm long overall; with twisted column. Rhachilla extension 0.5 length of fertile floret; pilose.

FLOWER Lodicules 2. Anthers 3. Stigmas 2.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp. Hilum punctiform. Disseminule comprising a floret.

DISTRIBUTION Australasia: New Zealand.
