Deyeuxia holmii

HABIT Perennial. Rhizomes elongated. Stolons absent, or present. Culms decumbent; 15–20 cm long. Leaf-sheaths smooth; glabrous on surface. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 1.5–3 mm long. Leaf-blades flat, or involute; 2–3 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; rough adaxially.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle. Peduncle smooth, or scaberulous above.

Panicle open, or contracted; linear, or lanceolate; 3–5 cm long.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 3–5 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus bearded. Floret callus hairs 0.75 length of lemma.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; reaching apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma; shiny. Lower glume elliptic; 3–5 mm long; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume elliptic; 1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma oblong; 3–5 mm long; membranous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma apex dentate; 2 -fid; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; arising 0.4–0.6 way up back of lemma; straight, or curved; 0.5–2 mm long overall; not or scarcely exserted from spikelet. Palea 0.66 length of lemma. Rhachilla extension 0.5 mm long; pilose.

FLOWER Lodicules 2. Anthers 3; 1.5–2 mm long. Stigmas 2.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp. Hilum punctiform. Disseminule comprising a floret.

DISTRIBUTION Europe: eastern. Asia-temperate: Siberia and Soviet far east. North America: Subarctic.
