Deyeuxia involuta

HABIT Perennial; caespitose; clumped densely. Culms erect; 18–28 cm long. Leaf-sheaths longer than adjacent culm internode; glabrous on surface, or pilose; with reflexed hairs. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 0.5 mm long. Leaf-blades involute; 5–10 cm long. Leaf-blade surface glabrous, or pilose.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle contracted; linear; 5–7 cm long; 0.3–0.6 cm wide. Primary panicle branches appressed; 1–2 cm long.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 5–5.5 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus pubescent. Floret callus hairs 0.5 mm long; 0.1 length of lemma.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma; gaping. Lower glume lanceolate; 5–5.5 mm long; 0.9 length of upper glume; membranous; purple; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scabrous (above). Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume lanceolate; 5–5.5 mm long; 1.2–1.3 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; purple; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Upper glume primary vein scabrous. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 4 mm long; membranous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma surface scaberulous. Lemma apex awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; arising 0.1 way up back of lemma; straight; 6 mm long overall; with twisted column. Rhachilla extension 1.4 mm long; pubescent.

FLOWER Anthers 3.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION South America: western South America.
