Deyeuxia gamblei

HABIT Perennial. Culms erect; 50–120 cm long; 3–6 -noded. Leaf-sheaths scaberulous. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 3–14 mm long; entire, or lacerate; obtuse. Leaf-blades 11–40 cm long; 4–9 mm wide; grey-green. Leaf-blade surface ribbed; grooved adaxially; smooth, or scaberulous; rough adaxially.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open; oblong; nodding; 10–30 cm long. Primary panicle branches 5–7 -nate; 5–8 cm long. Panicle branches scaberulous.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 5.3–6.4 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus bearded. Floret callus hairs 2.75–4.1 mm long; 0.6–1 length of lemma.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma; gaping. Lower glume lanceolate; 5.3–6.9 mm long; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scaberulous. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume lanceolate; 4.8–6.3 mm long; 1.5 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Upper glume primary vein scaberulous. Upper glume apex acuminate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma oblong; 3.8–4.7 mm long; hyaline; without keel; (3–)5 -veined. Lemma apex dentate; 2–4 -fid; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; arising 0.5–0.84 way up back of lemma; curved; 3.5–5.3 mm long overall. Palea 1.85–2.6 mm long; 0.46–0.64 length of lemma. Rhachilla extension 0.4–1.5 mm long; pubescent; hairy at tip.

FLOWER Lodicules 2; 1 mm long. Anthers 3; 1.5–1.9 mm long. Stigmas 2; plumose. Ovary glabrous.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-tropical: India.
