Calamagrostis turkestanica

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes elongated. Culms erect; 30–65 cm long. Lateral branches lacking. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 4 mm long. Leaf-blades 2–5 mm wide; stiff; glaucous. Leaf-blade surface scabrous. Leaf-blade apex attenuate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle open; oblong; interrupted; 6–12 cm long; 2–3 cm wide.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 6 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus bearded. Floret callus hairs 1 length of lemma.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; exceeding apex of florets; firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume lanceolate; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume primary vein scabrous. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acuminate. Upper glume lanceolate; 1.5–1.7 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Upper glume primary vein scabrous. Upper glume apex acuminate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 3.5–4 mm long; membranous; without keel; 5 -veined. Lemma apex erose; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn subapical; straight; 2 mm long overall; without a column. Palea 0.75 length of lemma.

FLOWER Lodicules 2. Anthers 3. Stigmas 2.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp. Hilum punctiform. Disseminule comprising a floret.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-temperate: Siberia, Soviet Middle Asia, and China.
