Colanthelia lanciflora
HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes short; pachymorph. Culms scandent; woody. Culm-internodes terete; hollow; 10 cm long; distally glabrous. Culm-nodes with distinct supra-nodal ridge. Lateral branches dendroid. Bud complement 1. Branch complement several; in a horizontal line; with 1 branch dominant; thinner than stem. Leaf-sheaths scaberulous; glabrous on surface. Leaf-sheath oral hairs lacking, or ciliate. Ligule absent. Collar with external ligule. Leaf-blade base asymmetrical; with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole glabrous, or pubescent. Leaf-blades lanceolate; 4–8.5 cm long; 5–9 mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with 8 secondary veins. Leaf-blade surface glabrous. Leaf-blade margins scabrous. Leaf-blade apex acuminate.
INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.
Panicle open; ovate; 4–8 cm long. Primary panicle branches appressed, or ascending. Panicle branches glabrous; with insignificant pulvini.
Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.
FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2–3 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets lanceolate; laterally compressed; 9–11 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes narrow; 2–2.5 mm long; obscured by lemmas.
GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume oblong; 3 mm long; 0.75 length of upper glume; chartaceous; red; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Lower glume surface glabrous. Lower glume apex acute; mucronate. Upper glume oblong; 4.5 mm long; 1 length of adjacent fertile lemma; chartaceous; red; 1-keeled; 3 -veined. Upper glume surface glabrous. Upper glume apex acute; mucronate.
FLORETS Fertile lemma elliptic; 4–5 mm long; red; keeled. Lemma apex obtuse; muticous, or mucronate. Palea hyaline; 2 -veined. Palea keels ciliate. Palea apex entire; obtuse, or acute. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.
FLOWER Lodicules 3; ciliate. Anthers 3. Stigmas 2.
FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.
