Elymus jacutensis

HABIT Perennial; caespitose; clumped loosely. Culms 45–75 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades 2–4 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; glabrous.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence composed of racemes.

Racemes 1; single; bilateral; 7–13 cm long; bearing 15–25 fertile spikelets on each. Rhachis flattened. Spikelet packing broadside to rhachis; lax. Rhachis internodes linear.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets sessile.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 3–5 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets elliptic to oblong; laterally compressed; 15–17 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes pubescent.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; 5–8 mm long; 1 length of upper glume; coriaceous; much thinner on margins; without keels; 3 -veined. Lower glume apex attenuate, or setaceously attenuate. Upper glume lanceolate; 5–8 mm long; 0.5–0.75 length of adjacent fertile lemma; coriaceous; with scarious margins; without keels; 3 -veined. Upper glume apex attenuate, or setaceously attenuate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 9–10 mm long; coriaceous; 5 -veined. Lemma surface pubescent. Lemma apex acute; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn 5–12 mm long overall. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 2; membranous. Anthers 3; 1.5–1.8 mm long. Stigmas 2. Ovary pubescent on apex.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.
