Indocalamus confertus

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms erect; 20–50 cm long; 3 mm diam.; woody. Culm-internodes terete; 4–9 cm long. Culm-nodes swollen. Lateral branches suffrutescent. Branch complement one. Culm-sheaths chartaceous; glabrous; without auricles; glabrous on shoulders. Culm-sheath ligule 2 mm high. Leaves cauline; 2–5 per branch. Leaf-sheath oral hairs lacking. Leaf-sheath auricles absent. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath. Leaf-blades elliptic; 11–16 cm long; 3–4.5 mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with 14–20 secondary veins; without cross veins. Leaf-blade apex attenuate.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle contracted; oblong.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels 2–6 mm long.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 4–5 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets linear; subterete; 12–25 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; 3 mm long; chartaceous; without keels. Lower glume apex setaceously attenuate. Upper glume lanceolate; 4–5 mm long; chartaceous; without keels. Upper glume apex setaceously attenuate.

FLORETS Fertile lemma lanceolate; 8 mm long; chartaceous; purple; without keel; 7 -veined. Lemma apex awned; 1 -awned. Palea 6–7 mm long. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 3. Anthers 3; 4 mm long; yellow. Stigmas 2.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION Asia-temperate: China.
