HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Rhizomes elongated; leptomorph. Culms erect; 200 cm long; woody. Culm-internodes terete. Lateral branches suffrutescent. Leaves cauline. Leaf-sheaths glabrous on surface; outer margin glabrous, or hairy. Leaf-sheath oral hairs setose; erect; 10 mm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane; 0.5 mm long. Leaf-blade base with a brief petiole-like connection to sheath; petiole glabrous. Leaf-blades lanceolate; 15–25 cm long; 15–30 mm wide. Leaf-blade venation with 12–16 secondary veins; with distinct cross veins. Leaf-blade surface scabrous; rough abaxially; glabrous. Leaf-blade margins scabrous. Leaf-blade apex attenuate; filiform.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle; subtended by bracts. Peduncle 9.5 cm long.

Panicle open; ovate; 18 cm long. Primary panicle branches ascending; 5–10 cm long; bearing 4–8 fertile spikelets on each lower branch. Panicle axis angular; glabrous.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled. Pedicels 5–10 mm long.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 7–9 fertile florets; with diminished florets at the apex. Spikelets linear; subterete; 15 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Rhachilla internodes obscured by lemmas; pubescent.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; shorter than spikelet. Lower glume lanceolate; 4 mm long; chartaceous; without keels. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume lanceolate; 5 mm long; chartaceous; without keels. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma ovate; 6–7 mm long; chartaceous; shiny; without keel; 3 -veined. Lemma surface glabrous. Lemma margins ciliate; hairy above. Palea chartaceous. Palea surface puberulous; hairy on back and on flanks. Apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped.

FLOWER Lodicules 3. Anthers 3. Stigmas 2.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.
