Panicum lagostachyum

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Culms 100 cm long. Culm-internodes distally pubescent. Ligule a ciliate membrane. Leaf-blades flat, or involute; 50 cm long; 5–7 mm wide. Leaf-blade surface glabrous. Leaf-blade apex pungent.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle spiciform; linear, or oblong; 7–10 cm long; 0.8–1.2 cm wide.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets; 1 fertile florets; without rhachilla extension. Spikelets elliptic, or oblong; dorsally compressed; 4–4.5 mm long; falling entire. Floret callus evident.

GLUMES Glumes reaching apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma. Lower glume ovate; 1 length of spikelet; membranous; grey; without keels; 3 -veined. Lower glume surface pilose. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume ovate; 1 length of spikelet; membranous; grey; without keels; 5 -veined. Upper glume surface pilose. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Basal sterile florets male; with palea. Lemma of lower sterile floret similar to upper glume; ovate; 1 length of spikelet; membranous; grey; 5 -veined; pilose; acute. Fertile lemma elliptic; dorsally compressed; 4–4.5 mm long; indurate; without keel. Lemma margins involute. Palea involute; indurate.

FRUIT Caryopsis with adherent pericarp.

DISTRIBUTION South America: Brazil.
