Peyritschia koelerioides

HABIT Perennial; caespitose. Culms 30–60 cm long. Ligule an eciliate membrane. Leaf-blades 4–15 cm long; 1–3 mm wide.

INFLORESCENCE Inflorescence a panicle.

Panicle contracted; linear; 5–20 cm long.

Spikelets solitary. Fertile spikelets pedicelled.

FERTILE SPIKELETS Spikelets comprising 2 fertile florets; with a barren rhachilla extension. Spikelets oblong; laterally compressed; 3–3.5 mm long; breaking up at maturity; disarticulating below each fertile floret. Floret callus pubescent.

GLUMES Glumes persistent; similar; exceeding apex of florets; thinner than fertile lemma; shiny. Lower glume elliptic; 1 length of upper glume; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Lower glume lateral veins absent. Lower glume apex acute. Upper glume elliptic; 1.2–1.5 length of adjacent fertile lemma; membranous; 1-keeled; 1 -veined. Upper glume lateral veins absent. Upper glume apex acute.

FLORETS Fertile lemma oblong; 2–3 mm long; cartilaginous; keeled; keeled above; 5 -veined. Lemma apex lobed; 2 -fid; with oblong lobes; incised 0.2 of lemma length; obtuse; awned; 1 -awned. Principal lemma awn dorsal; arising 0.75 way up back of lemma; 0.5 mm long overall; not or scarcely exserted from spikelet.

FLOWER Anthers 2.

DISTRIBUTION North America: Mexico. South America: Mesoamericana.
